I attended performances of the Jewish theater in the Nestroyhof
Dear Mr. Rosenzweig, In reference to the article in the “Gemeinde” of June 2004, entitled "Das Theater im Nestroyhof – eine Kultur dem Vergessen zu entreißen" (“The Theater in the Nestroyhof – Rescuing a Culture from Oblivion”), I’d like you to know that I am among the people who attended the Jewish theater at Nestroyplatz. At the time, I was only nine to eleven years old – in the years around 1933 to 1937.My parents were used to visiting the Jewish theater now and then and often took me with them. I still remember well the star of the ensemble, a young woman with the surname “Pastor,” who appeared mainly in male roles and had – what was unusual at the time – a man’s haircut. I also remember her in a piece where she played a girl and sang a song that began with “Bochirim, ich bin zu haben” (“Boys, I am available…”). Because I was a child, as long as there was an empty seat, I was always allowed to sit in the front row.In those days, there was a coffee house around the corner from the theater where one could admire the actors who would meet there after performances.I hope the above is of interest to you.
