Wide Open WindowTheater & Film in its Relationship With Society and Politics Veranstaltungsreihe Oct. 1 to Nov. 8, 2012 In cooperation with the Autumn Festival “Aufrisse” of Vienna Neubau Free entrance at all events (includes free membership card) The Window Kandlgasse 6, 1070 Vienna Do governments appropriate the social influence of art for political purposes? Is the patronage of individual artists by politicians unehtical? Do artists who work in the service of government share responsbility for its abuses of power? Can independent art help to mitigate injustice? With the events of "Wide Open Window," the Jewish Theater of Austria wishes to explore these and related questions. The series includes film presentations, lectures with improvisation, and workshops. PROGRAMFilm presentations Jud Süss ("Jew Suss", 1940)* (with introduction & post-screening discussion) Mon., Oct. 1, 2012, 7 pm and Every Tues., Oct. 2 - Nov. 6, 2012, 7 pm A truly great work of genius. An antisemetic film, the likes of which we could only dream." – Josef Goebbels, Diary, August 18, 1940 An important historical document, Jud Süss demonstrates how antisemitic propaganda was made palatable to the German masses and even effective in helping to incite mass collusion with a program that ultimately led to wholesale atrocity. It offers insight into some of the darkest regions of social psychology, shows how the Nazis used film art to pervert historical understanding, and stands as primary evidence of the potential dangers of state-controlled art. Because distribution, sale, and promotion of Jud Süß has been banned in Austria since WWII, the film, which stars Ferdinand Marion and Werner Krauss, two of the most celebrated Austrian actors of its day, is virtually unknown in Austria. The Nazi regime considered Jud Süß to be among its most effective tools in preparing the way for the "Final Solution". *Permissions for these screenings, courtesy of Friedrich-W.-Murnau-Stiftung Lecture with Improvisation Totem & Tabori – The Genesis and Second Coming of the Jewish Theater of Austria Thurs., Oct. 4, 2012, 7 pm Thurs., Nov. 8, 2012, 7 pm On the occasion of the 13th anniversary of the first Jewish Theater company in Austria since WWII, the story of the Jewish Theater of Austria - its social and aesthetic aims, its politically independent productions, and its critical confrontation with “Culture-political” non-transparency.
