Wienweb - March 19, 2007 Jewish Theater in the Spotlight
FESTIVAL This week, Vienna appears under the signs of Jewish culture. Since Monday, scholars at Vienna University have been discussing the theme "Vienna and its Jewish experience 1900-1938". The World Congress for Jewish Theater will begin on Tuesday and embedded is the "Tikun Olam" festival of international Jewish theater, which has been running since Sunday. The "Tikun Olam" Theater FestivalOrganized by the Jewish Theater of Austria, the theater festival is being given here this year for the first time. The title of the festival also serves as its motto. "Tikun Olam" is a call to heal the damaged and to begin, in a positive sense, again. This central concern is also represented by the JTA theater company and is symbolized by the choice of its logo, which shows a broken pencil. The festival program includes performances, discussions, workshops, and lectures. The venues include, among others, the Jewish Museum, the French Cultural Institute, Theater des Augenblicks, and JTA?s event space "The Window" in the Kandlgasse in Vienna Neubau. World Congress of Jewish TheaterEach year, another city serves as the stage for the Congress of the Association for Jewish Theater (AJT). This year, Vienna serves as host. Some 100 participants are expected from around the world. The opening at Urania on Tuesday afternoon will be presented by, among otherrs, AJT President, Mira Hirsch, Warren Rosenzweig of the Jewish Theater of Austria, and Vienna Chief Rabbi Paul Chaim Eisenberg.
