Falter - Apr. 27, 2007 No Little Pigs
LETTER TO THE EDITOR Regarding: “Farce with Swastikas” by W. Kralicek, Falter 11/07In his article, Wolfgang Kralicek alleges that I let Warren Rosenzweig dictate my articles in Augustin for me. Don’t worry, I do my own work and I write it myself. But I haven’t been fooled by Martin Gabriel in the process, as has apparently happened in the case of my colleague Kralicek. He didn’t contact me to find out if Martin Gabriel really did accuse Warren Rosenzweig, during an interview with me, of drawing swastikas in the basement of the Nestroyhof, but only asked Martin Gabriel about it. Considering that, as a result of his statement, Martin Gabriel must now answer to legal charges for defamation (antisemitism goes unpunished in Austria), he doesn’t have much choice but to claim that he never said it, even though this is not the truth. Anyone who would portray Warren Rosenzweig as a ridiculous artist has certainly not seen or read a single play of his. Sure, it isn’t easy for him to secure subventions, since his artistic work is not conformist like that of a Frédéric Lion who, in reward for his public attacks against Rosenzweig (“inverse Fascism”) is offered the role of artistic director for Martin Gabriel’s Nestroysaele group. If Martin Gabriel says that his forbears were “no little pigs,” then he suffers from the same memory gap as on his homepage www.nestroyhof.eu (see “Historie”): It is well documented that this part of the Polsterer family had an interest in Jewish real estate [in WWII] and remains still today, without negative consequence, in possession of at least two Aryanized objects, one of which is the Nestroyhof. In facsimiles of original documentation, one can read more about this at www.nestroyhof.at, the homepage of the “Restore the Nestroyhof” initiative of the Jewish Theater of Austria, which Martin Gabriel is currently trying to shut down through a lawsuit. Of course, not all Polsterers are the same. There are also people with this name who are critical of the history of the family. This is an attribute that Martin Gabriel clearly lacks. - Florian Müller Copyright © 2007 Falter (trans: JTA) Also see Fascist Farce.
